Director-General offers condolences on behalf of UNESCO on the passing of former President of Cuba, Fidel Castro‎ Ruz

In a letter addressed to President Raul Castro, Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General offered condolences to the people of Cuba after the death of former President Fidel Castro Ruz.

Irina Bokova recalled his leadership in steering his country through difficult times, fighting for the right to education, harnessing  the power of achieving free and inclusive education for all through his initiative 'Yo si puedo'.

President Fidel Castro always strongly emphasised the link between education and socio-cultural development as a power for overall human development.

The Director-General also recalled President Fidel Castro's visit to the UNESCO Executive Board in 1995.
