During her official visit to N'Djamena on 8 August 2016, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, attended the inauguration ceremony of President H.E. Idriss Deby Itno.
The ceremony was held as part of the celebrations of the independence’s 56th anniversary, and attended by 15 Heads of State and Government of African countries, including Mauritania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Central African Republic, Republic of Guinea, Rwanda, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Republic of Sudan, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana.
The Director-General held a bilateral meeting with President Idriss Deby Itno, when she congratulated him on his re-election and his role as Acting President of the African Union. The Director-General and the President discussed also the security issues in West Africa and the challenges presented by the urgent needs for the preservation of Lake Chad. She welcomed the development of a regional dialogue and called for cooperation between UNESCO and Chad to be strengthened, notably in the fields of secondary and higher education, teacher training, science, and hydrological and environmental issues.
President Idriss Deby Itno thanked the Director General and highlighted that he assumes “great responsibility to preserve the values of peace and national unity, having reviewed policy priorities for the next five years to include youth education and quality training, women's rights and their place in national institutions, as well as tackling problems linked to water, especially to drinking water, and rural development."
The Director-General also met with all Chadian ministers linked to UNESCO's fields of competence.
