UNESCO Director-General discusses with Foreign Minister of Argentina the importance of the disclosure of Documents relating to past human rights violations

On 31 May, the UNESCO Director-General discussed with H.E. Susana Malcorra, Foreign Minister of Argentina, the disclosure by UNESCO to the Government of Argentina of 75 documents relating to human rights violations that occurred in Argentina between 1978 and 1982.

These documents had been addressed in the framework of the UNESCO Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, one of the permanent subsidiary bodies of UNESCO’s Executive Board, which examines communications received from a person, group of persons or NGO (non-governmental organizations) relating to cases and questions concerning the exercise of human rights in UNESCO’s fields of competence.

The Foreign Minister thanked the Director-General for her decision to disclose the documents, to shine new light on difficult chapters of the country’s past. Irina Bokova underlined the importance of knowledge about past human rights violations to bolster the struggle against new violations today in countries across the world.

“Knowing the past is essential to building a better, more just and peaceful future for all,” she said.
